Grand Ledge, Michigan had a very
long tradition of clay manufacturing.
Workers at these factories would
use their lunch times to mold excess
clay into figures and then add them
to the kilns during firing of the tile
and bricks. Recognized today as folk
artists, these workers created frogs,
alligators, lambs, Indian heads and
other objects. But it was the Grand
Ledge Lion that became most
famous in the area. Sold as door
stops and banks, they became
popular in the small town.
